Ravenel Bridge, Charleston SC |
On this third day of the New Year we begin our excursion to sunny Florida-however, our first day of travel has been every thing but sunny. We began our travel down Broad Creek Road (our 6-mile drive way) at 8:30 a.m. to 17 south through Jacksonville, Myrtle Beach, and arriving in Charleston, SC about 3 o'clock. The weathermen were correct in describing today's weather; not only did we have a chance of rain, we also experienced a day's travel of 100% likelihood of receiving precipitation. In layman's terms it was a wet, drizzly, misty, showery, overcast gray day. We have pitched our awning at site 1 at St. James Island County Park in Charleston. On the way through Charleston we saw the USS Yorktown, which we hope to tour if the sun shows it's rays; and we crossed over the Cooper River on the eight-lane-wide Ravenel Bridge, which is fairly new, having been built in 2005. It was incredible to drive over the river and see the low-covering clouds shroud the 575' suspension cables. While setting up camp: push a button, then push another button, and then push a few more buttons, we remembered what it was like to set up a tent in the rain. Ahhhhhh.....yes.... camping in style!
